Recent findings from the Eurobarometer, a comprehensive opinion survey, reveal that an overwhelming majority of Europeans consider climate change a critical global issue, with 93% expressing concern. Following the surge in energy prices and natural gas supply worries after the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, over half of respondents (58%) believe that Europe should accelerate its transition towards a green economy. From an economic standpoint, 73% of Europeans agree that the costs of climate change damage far outweigh the investments required for green transformation, with 75% acknowledging that climate action can drive innovation.

Approximately 88% of EU citizens agree that greenhouse gas emissions should be minimized and offset to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Moreover, 87% believe that setting more ambitious EU targets is crucial to increasing the use of renewable energy, while 85% emphasize the significance of actions to improve energy efficiency, such as encouraging better insulation, solar panel installations, and electric vehicle usage. Additionally, 70% of respondents believe that reducing fossil fuel imports would enhance energy security and provide economic benefits for the EU.

The survey also highlights that the majority of European citizens (93%) have taken individual actions in their daily lives to consciously make sustainable choices regarding climate change. However, respondents stress the need for complementary reforms by governments (56%), the EU (56%), and the business sector (53%) to align with individual efforts in addressing climate change.

The impact of climate change is palpable in the daily lives of Europeans, with over one-third feeling personal risks and threats related to the environment and climate. This feeling is even more pronounced in seven member states, primarily concentrated in Southern European countries, including Poland and Hungary.

An impressive 84% of Europeans agree that addressing climate change and environmental issues should be prioritized to improve public health. Furthermore, 63% of respondents believe that preparing for the effects of climate change will yield positive outcomes for EU citizens.

The Eurobarometer's special survey on climate change involved 26,358 citizens from all 27 EU member states and examined various social and demographic groups. The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews at respondents' homes or via face-to-face video interviews between May 10th and June 15th, 2023.

These findings reflect the continued overwhelming support of EU citizens for energy transition, with climate change and environmental concerns remaining at the forefront of the EU's most pressing challenges. As a result, there is a growing demand for large-scale investments in renewable energy.
