Many European countries have insisted that the Nord Stream pipelines were deliberately damaged

Sep 29, 2022

On September 26, local time, a leak occurred in the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, which was located near Bornholm Island, Denmark. Then on the 27th (Tuesday), there were also two leaks in the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline, also in the northeastern part of Bornholm Island, one in Denmark and the other in Sweden.

The "Nord Stream 1" and "Nord Stream 2" natural gas pipelines connecting Russia and Germany have suffered three large leaks within 24 hours, arousing global attention.

At present, many European countries have determined that the three leaks were caused by deliberate sabotage, and an explosion was detected near the leak point. However, there are different opinions on who is the culprit behind the scenes.

However, the strange thing is that the United States seems to have already known about the leak. According to German media reports, as early as a few weeks ago, the CIA had warned Germany that the Baltic gas pipeline may be attacked

Who is the mastermind behind the scenes?

Russia has cut gas supplies to Europe after the West imposed sanctions on it. The Russian side said on the leak that there may be sabotage, and the natural gas leak undermined the energy security of the European continent.

It is worth mentioning that the United States may indeed be a potential beneficiary after the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines. European gas prices have soared following a sharp drop in Russian gas supplies to Europe this year, while U.S. gas exports to Europe have also risen sharply. In the process, U.S. natural gas suppliers have made a lot of profits. It is said that each natural gas ship sailing from the United States to Europe can earn more than 100 million U.S. dollars for U.S. natural gas suppliers.

And more coincidentally, according to the German "Der Spiegel", the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) warned Germany a few weeks ago that the natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea may be attacked.

Europe's energy crisis may get worse

The Nord Stream gas pipeline has been at the crux of this year's energy conflict between Europe and Russia. At a time when the current European energy crisis continues to intensify, the destruction of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline will undoubtedly arouse suspicion among many parties, and may also exacerbate the energy crisis in Europe.

According to preliminary estimates by Russian energy security experts, it will take several months to repair the two pipelines after they are damaged.

Although neither of the two damaged pipelines had been in operation before, the damage completely ruined the possibility of Europe getting Russian gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline before the end of the year.

In addition, although the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines are not in operation, the pipelines are still filled with natural gas, and a large-scale leak of methane gas could pose huge safety and environmental hazards. Danish officials said the largest natural gas leak caused a surface disturbance more than a kilometer in diameter.
