EU Agency: January 2024 Marks Hottest Month on Record Worldwide

In a stark revelation by the European Union climate monitoring agency, Copernicus Climate Change Service, January 2024 has been identified as the hottest January ever recorded globally.

According to the agency's press release on the 8th of February, the average surface temperature across the globe for January 2024 soared to 13.14 degrees Celsius. This surpasses the previous record set in January 2022 by 0.12 degrees Celsius and stands a staggering 1.66 degrees Celsius higher than the average January temperature from 1850 to 1900, before the industrial era. This alarming trend marks the eighth consecutive month since June 2023 to break temperature records.

The report also indicates that while the El Niño phenomenon began weakening last month, there is a possibility of it transitioning to a La Niña event later this year. Nevertheless, despite these natural oscillations, January 2024 witnessed record-high global average sea surface temperatures.

International media reports attribute these record-breaking temperatures primarily to the El Niño phenomenon and the continuous rise in global sea surface temperatures, with the main driver being the persistent increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, emphasized that rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is the sole pathway to mitigating global temperature rise.

Last month, the Copernicus Climate Change Service declared 2023 as the hottest year on record since 1850. Some American scientists have even estimated a one-third probability that 2024 could surpass 2023 in terms of temperature, with a 99% likelihood of ranking within the top five hottest years on record.
